When looking at generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), the traditional formula is Sales – Expenses = Profit. This formula is logical and simple, however, it goes against human nature. We find ways to justify spending all of our revenue. It encourages a business owner to focus on sales and expenses first, and profit is an afterthought. It allows you to analyze your business’ finances, but does not allow you to analyze the best system to operate your business.

The Profit First formula is Sales – Profit = Expenses. Logically, the math is the same as GAAP, but it encourages radically different behavior on the part of the business owner. Profit First provides the business owner with a proactive system to allocate and manage cash flow. With Profit First, you take a predetermined percentage of profit from every sale first, and only the remainder is left for expenses. This method gives a business owner a clear picture of the financial health of the business, and helps the business become permanently profitable.
